Marion,
Thank you so much for taking the time to share Gracie's pictures with us. I avoid making remarks about who a child resembles because I always get it wrong and end up with mustard on my face.
I will say that having a child that likes black licorice in the family is great. Virginia always loved it and lately I have been going to Wall-Mart to buy the Aussie licorice which is bigger around and solid. It has a real kick. Might be awhile before Gracie can handle it.
Spencer and Brian looked great and very happy. We love you all and think of you often. Can't wait to see pictures of Abby and John.
Later Ed
Hey Marion - Great to see a couple pics of Gracie - boy, has she grown. I haven't seen pics of her since a couple months after she was born. To me, she looks like a true 'Norton' - the most like Delmar than any of the other kids! It's fun to hear her 'talking' in the background when I phone - and of course, there's always a little added 'to-do' by John - fun too! I know we all would enjoy pics of Abby and John too!! BRING'UM ON!!

Love you,
Cassy

Someone was going to get really mad at me if I didn't get some pictures of Grace up here. I tried to post some video (and I will try again) but I think the file may have been to big - it wasn't working. Anyway, the first picture is of Grace swinging in the backyard. She really loves swinging while the other kids are around and she can watch what they are doing. The other picture is obviously of Grace eating a piece of black licorice. Only with the fourth child! This child gets a lot of things Abby would not have had in a million years. She has that look on her face because Bryan was trying to take the licorice away and Grace was pretty intent that there was no way that was going to happen. I will try to get some more pictures up. I should post one of Abby. She is about six feet tall now and I am sure no one would believe it is her.

Looking good Cass. It is nice to have a break to just go and do something uplifting. We are glad you had such a good time.

Hi All!! Well, my kids think I’m difficult to buy presents for, especially for Christmas and my Birthday, and especially because they both live so far away, but a year or so ago, Jocelyn hit on a wonderful gift idea for me – she gets me tickets for the ‘Time Out For Women’ events sponsored by Deseret Books – And Christmas 2007 was no exception. The schedule for 2008 was in San Diego, February 2 but out of respect for President Hinckley’s funeral, it was rescheduled for May 10th. When Jocelyn bought the tickets, she never thought she would be getting a ‘2-holiday gifts for the price of one’ bargain – she originally bought them for my Christmas present but I was able to finally enjoy them the weekend of Mother’s Day – YEAH!! This year as a surprise, she emailed my friend, Christy Johnson (our Ward Choir Director) and invited her along too!! The event was on Saturday but so we could have more of a get-away weekend, Christy’s husband, Eric who travels a lot, used his points to get us a room at the Comfort Inn, downtown in the Gaslight District. It was a corner room, with great windows to watch all of the lights and excitement of the downtown on a Friday night.

After we settled in our room, we walked around downtown to check out some of the available restaurants and finally decided to eat dinner at Sammy’s Pizza. They have a selection of ‘exotic-types’ of pizzas and great desserts. We chose the ‘Thai’ creation pizza – it really had a great flavor and had peanuts on it – I would never think of eating pizza with peanuts, but we were up for something new and different. I want you all to know it was Christy’s idea to get the ‘humongous’ sundae for dessert!! After dinner we walked back to the hotel, it was getting dark and the ‘wilder-types’ were out on the streets, so thought it a good idea to get back to the room and in for the night. The hotel was only a couple of blocks from Qualcom Stadium (I think that’s what they call it now!), so we were able to actually watch the Padres play up on the big screens. At 9PM, we even got to enjoy the big fireworks display – such fun!!

The next morning, the hotel had a great breakfast buffet, so we ate hearty and then, started out for the short walk to the Convention Center. As we came close to the main entrance, you could see so many wonderful LDS women walking together, with a purpose, a singleness of mind, to enjoy a wonderful day of uplifting words and music. Some of the speakers were Emily Watts, Jason Wright and John Byetheway – The music was provided by Kenneth Cope and Cherie Call – they were all great! This event was on a more spiritual note than the previous one I had been to, which touched our hearts even more.

Jocelyn is a ‘Sweetheart Girl’ and always gets the ‘salad box lunch’ for me, and this time was no exception. The day had started out cloudy and over cast, so when it was lunchtime and the sun was shining outside, Christy wanted to head for the water. We ended up climbing 3 flights of stairs (boy, am I out of shape – my legs were like rubber when we got to the top) and at the top found an eating area with tables, chairs and umbrellas – what a find!! And to be able to look out over San Diego Harbor was an added pleasure. The sun was warm, the food was good and the company was the best! The program ended at 4pm, we got on the road and made it back home by 5:30PM. The ride home gave Christy and I some special, quiet time to talk about family and friends and to allow our friendship to grow. Just being around Christy makes me want to be a better ‘Daughter of God.’ Thank you Jocelyn for this wonderful Mother’s Day gift!!

Thank's to all those who made this Mother's Day a special day!! - Andy, Ninha and the kids for the lovely flowers, Jocelyn for the fun get-away, Ed and Marie for a wonderful 'Omaha Steak' dinner, Cindi for the special and unexpected message she left on my answer machine - I LOVE YOU ALL!!

Till next time,
Love,
Cassy

Since we´re all doing happy belated´s....Happy belated Anniversary to mom and dad.
41 years....and you still like each other...GOOD JOB!!

Sunday, May 25, 2008

I got Marie a new bike. Only took us a month to pick it up. Hopefully she can get some exercise that doesn't hurt her hips and yet gives her lungs some deep breaths. She has had a bad time breathing lately
Something is wrong it is only letting me type in this small size type?
Anyway: Marion I want you to know that Marie reminded me that the 24th was your birthday and I completely forgot! OOOOHHHHPPPSSSS! HAPPY BIRTHDAY !!!
The 24th was also the one year anniversary of broken hip It was also Saturday and I was sick in bed most of the day. Besides that Brian and Spencer look terrific and cool and so special so glad they had a good father and son outing. It will be a very special time for them for the rest of their lives.

The boys are back from their whirlwind San Francisco adventure. It is hard to do justice to the experience with just a few photos, but we understand that everything was pretty cool. Kind of cool to see Spencer's drawing up on the big screen. In addition to the balloon arches there were also massive balloon sculptures everywhere of everything from flowers to dinosaurs. The beanbags are part of Google life. They have them everywhere to sit on for meetings. Spencer really liked visiting San Francisco. Bryan said that they did as much in two days as some people would in a week. They came back with little goodies for all of us and lots of fun stories. You can catch some rather strange video of Spencer on YouTube by typing in doodle4google in the search box. More info to come on t-shirts and I will try to put up some more photos.
Happy belated 39th birthday Marion!
For once I get to be the first one to post a happy birthday wish on the blog! We hope you had a great day and that the kids did a little something special for you. Don't forget to post those exciting pictures of Bryan and Spencer's trip.
We love you.
Jocelyn and family
Thanks for the pictures dad. Sorry you´re not feeling well.
Hope to see some exciting pictures of Spencer and his trip soon!!

HOLY MACKEREL!
What a great family we have. You have all reached out to support Spencer and it appears to have paid off. Being named one of four national winners out of over 16,000 entries is quite an accomplishment. Spencer will be bringing home a haul that required his dad to go and buy an inexpensive suitcase to get it all home. Along with the loot will be memories that will last a lifetime. Some of you have asked about buying t-shirts with Spencer's doodle on it. When Bryan gets home we will post the information about how to order the shirts (I understand they are pretty cool). The head of music and video at YouTube told Spencer that she totally needed one because it fit her job so well. We will post pictures when the boys are home as well as more details about their trip. Today they are headed for the Winchester Mystery House and then on into San Francisco to the new museum of modern art (Nathan do you remember when we visited the Winchester Mystery House with your Dad and Grandpa when we were kids?). This stop was Spencer's idea. He told Bryan he read about it in a book, probably the Dangerous Book for Boys or something. Tomorrow the boys take the boat to Alcatraz and explore more of San Francisco. They arrive home early Saturday morning. Love and thanks again to everyone.
We are so very happy about Spencer's success. We are glad to have been a little part in helping him and we hope that the Norton family understands how much we love and appreciate them in good times and bad. Their input as well as the rest of the family in this blog helps us all to be closer and shrinks the distances between family members that are spread so far and wide. It is an important record of our family. Hopefully it will continue.......with your support.

Coming attractions include:
Lou Cash's 70th birthday party pictures
David Cash and his finance Robin
Random shots of the rest of last weekend
and
hopefully pictures of the Norton family/kids
Nate Ginn family/kids

HI ALL!! Well, I know it's been a couple of weeks since Mother's Day and with all the excitement about Spencer, I've been 'remiss' in not posting a BIG THANK YOU to Andy, Ninha, Shawnna and Drew for the beautiful bouquet of roses they sent me. They arrived at work on Friday morning before Mother's Day - what a great way to start the weekend!! There was so many roses and all in the colors I love, that I wanted to find a way to save them, so I checked online and found out how to save roses to make potpourri with them. Right now I have them bunched together by color with cotton string safely hanging in the garage. Soon, when they are all dried, I'm going to finish making potpourri with them and display them in a lovely bowl in the house. This way, as I pass by them I will be able to remember the lovely gift given and Thank Heavenly Father for the blessing of family.
Love, Grandma TaTa
So exciting!! Congratulations Spencer! Marion, you'll have to fill us in on all the details of the trip. Unfortunately none of the rest of us has anything anywhere near that exciting to share... unless one of you ladies is expecting?!! (no, not me)
Have a great day
Jocelyn
HI ALL!! Well the votes are in - I just got a call from Marion - SPENCER WON IN HIS AGE GROUP!!! YEAH!!!!!! So, he'll be coming home with his very own, new lap top and loads of fun memories. Marion said it was a challenge for Bryan to take pics - Google was so protective about having pics taken, but I'm sure he will post those when they get home. If you want to check out the Winning Doodle it was Grace Moon / Grades 4-6 / Region 10 / Canyon Middle School / CA.

WE ARE SO PROUD OF YOU, SPENCER!! WAY TO GO!!

LOVE, AUNT CASSY
HI ALL! Well, I'm on pins and needles waiting for Spencer's big moment - the time is getting closer. I keep watching the time at the lower right corner of my computer - willing the minutes to go by so it gets closer to the moment when we all know who the winner is? Marion said she would call the moment she knows anything. I keep checking on Google to see if they have posted anything about this special day, but nothing so far. I'm sure as soon as Marion knows anything, the news will pass along the family 'grapevine' as fast as lighting!
Love you all!

HI ALL!! I'm not 100% sure but I think today is 'travel day' for Spencer and his Dad - Flying out to Mountain View, CA - the home of 'Google.' I tried calling the Norton home, but no answer and no answer on Marion's cell - maybe they were on their way to or from the airport -heehee!! Oh, I just got a call back from Marion, she was vacuuming and couldn't here my phone call. She said Spencer and Bryan left this morning at 10:15AM, on a flight into Dulles and then, on to San Francisco. Marion says all the contestants stay at the same hotel tonight, get picked up tomorrow morning and are driven to Google on buses, where they are separated into age groups. After that they all get a tour of the Google complex and then, have a class conducted by the 'Master Doodler' at Google - the guy who does all the home page doodles! How exciting!! They have lunch around noon, and then, the final ceremony will probably be held between 1 - 2pm. First, they announce the 4 finalists and then, finally they announce the BIG WINNER!! Marion said the day concludes at 3:00PM PST, so she's expecting a call from Bryan the moment the winner is announced and I'm sure the word will go out to everyone - MAKE SURE TO CHECK THE BLOG!!

I must have voted 100's of times, like Jocelyn, I could type 'mackerel' in my sleep. I even thought maybe I was getting 'carpal tunnel' or some kind of 'repetative motion' condition because I voted so many times!! This has been a wonderful experience for the whole family. You have my LOVE AND SUPPORT, Spencer. You are a 'WINNER' in my book!

Love, Aunt Cassy
Nortons-
We're anxiously awaiting the results of the doodle4google contest. Nothing was up on the site yet so please let us know if you find out the results. We've all been voting. I can type mackerel in my sleep!! But now all we can do is keep our fingers crossed and hope! We're behind you all the way, Spencer!
You'll have to let us know how the trip to Google went as well. I bet that was pretty exciting, for Spencer AND Bryan.
Have a great day!
Jocelyn

Hi All,
It has really been fun to spread the word about Spencer's art work. Everybody at work was impressed when we got on the work computer and found the site. Marie has been inviting the people at Staples to vote also. I even was able to vote Monday and Tuesday but today it said no more Charlie. So we are doing all we can to help.

Now that I see that Marion was able to post I/we would really like some new pictures of the family especially the kids. The picture of Spencer that was in the newspaper article was so cute. He looks so good and grown up and smart. Especially SMART.
Please Ed

And also would like to say Great Post to Jeff. Looks like you had a great time. Hope you recover the lost ground at the Soccer job.
Dad

Hi All,
I voted early this morning. It was easy to click on the link and get to the site but finding Spencer's art proved a bit of a challenge. I still don't know how exactly I got to his doodle!
When I did it was easy to click on the vote button. I read the rules but I could not find any reference to the number voting questions I have- such as: Can you vote more than once a day? Are you limited to one vote for the week? Can you vote once every day? etc..
I do know now that you can only vote once a day. I will try again tomorrow.
No matter the problems this is a lot of fun for us all and we are very impressed with Spencer

Hi All!! Here is the story that goes along with the pictures up above. This is an article about Spencer that appeared last week in their local newspaper, the Courier Post.
LUMBERTON – Doodling along the margins’ of his school books has paid off for Spencer Norton. The Ashbrook Elementary School third-grader is among 40 nationwide finalists in the Doodle 4 Google contest, in which students dressed up the search engine’s logo.

“I’m very, very excited,” said the 8-year old. “Last night, I couldn’t go to bed because I was so excited. I was up until 10 pm.”

Spencer’s rock music-inspired design – with an electric guitar replace the L and the tow speakers of a boombox replacing the Os in the word Google – was picked from thousands of entries nationwide.

“It’s very polished,” said Allison Heller, Spencer’s homeroom teacher. “Most third-graders’ artwork doesn’t look like this.”

Contest entries had to be similar to the designs that adorn Google’s homepage on special occasions and holidays. The contest’s theme was “What if…”

Each of 18 children in Megan Mancini’s gifted and talented class made up a design. The themes the students chose to illustrate included “What if it was summer all year round” and “What if there was no such thing as asthma.” Mancini said. All 18 designs were then put on display so Ashbrook students could vote for their favorite. The six designs with the most votes were sent to Google, but only Spencer’s was picked as a regional winner.

“I thought people were going to be jealous, but that didn’t happen,” Spencer said. “All my friends, they think that I’m going to win.”

Spencer explained why he picked his theme, “What if the world rocked,” to Google in a statement he sent along with the drawing.

“I told them that I can express myself with music,” Spencer said. “If everyone could do that, everyone would be happy and the world would rock.”

Spencer’s design, along with the other 39 winners, will be displayed in a gallery on Google’s Web site. From Monday, May 12 through Sunday, May 18, the public will get a chance to vote for the doodles they believe best capture the contest’s theme.

On May 21, the students whose designs got the most votes will be revealed during a ceremony at the Googleplex in Mountain View, CA.

Google’s Webmaster Dennis Hwang will then pick the overall winner, who will receive a $10,000 college scholarship, a laptop and a T-shirt printed with their design.

The winner’s school will receive $25, 000 to improve or establish a computer lab.

“One of the dreams that the district has is to be able to put wireless laptops in the classrooms, so the kids don’t have to go to the lab all the time,” School district spokeswoman Betsy Kaulskey said.

Of all the prizes, the one that excites Spencer the most is having his design on Google’s homepage for 24 hours.

“Millions of people will see my design,” Spencer said. “That’s crazy.”

We love you and we're all voting and rooting for you Spencer!!
Love, Aunt Cassy
Hi All! I'm sorry about the latest blog I put up. It's a story about Spencer in their local newspaper, and I was hoping it would be bigger in size so you could read it. I'll post it a different way later so you can see and read it better!
Love you All,
Cassy

Thanks for the support everyone. The voting starts today so if everyone could get on and vote it would be great. Cassy has the link listed below, but this is where you go if you can not connect through her link (www.google.com/doodle4google) . We really are not sure if you can vote once a day or just once between now and Sunday. Please help us out by voting now and checking back to see if you can vote again. And if you would pass the voting information off to friends and other relatives so that they can vote also it would be great. Thanks again to everyone for the support.

Lots of love to you all!

Spencer and the Nortons - We can't wait to see Spencer's artwork tomorrow and we'll pass on the link to others we know so we can flood Google with votes for his entry. It's so exciting that he's made it this far and has won the trip, etc. So much fun!!

John Denver has hit Luxembourg! I asked Mom for the CD and she got me the 'definitive collection' for Christmas. Since then it has been the regular in our CD player. I catch the kids singing the songs all the time. Our current favorites are 'Leaving on a jet plane' 'Take me home, country roads' and... well, most of the others too. I like that it's music the children can listen to with pretty good 'natural' themes. And it's very American! The kids are learning the names of the states at the same time... let's see, there's Colorado, Montana, West Virginia, and others!

more of the same...

These videos are from about a month ago. Alienor went ice skating with school one afternoon so the rest of the kids wanted to go too. I took them by myself the following afternoon. It was pretty comical with Margot and Perceval but it was fun to try, just for the experience. By the end Margot could stand up by herself and she actually made it once around the rink, albeit very slowly. Alienor decided that she loved ice skating and she couldn't stop staring at the girl and her trainer doing figure skating. Maybe next season we'll make an effort to go more often. I'll definitely pass on Perceval next time though. He can sit in the bleachers.

I actually didn't take any still shots so these are all I had to post from that day.

happy mother´s day to all you wonderful mothers in the family! You are all wonderful examples to me. I hope your husbands and children treat you right...at least today...and that you´re all happy.
lots of hugs,
cindi

A couple of weeks ago Marie took her cub scouts on a hike in the Anza Borrego dessert where the Mormon battalion went when as they made their way to San Diego on a two thousand mile military march during the Mexican American war. Anyway, a member of the Stake Presidency, Bill Bunker, organized the hike and about 4 or five packs made the journey. It takes about three hours to travel there and a couple of hours to make the hike and then there was the return trip so it was an all day outing. An ancestor of Marie's, Charles Young Webb, was a member of the battalion. It was 90 plus degrees with a breeze in sandy soil with just a slight uphill grade so it was a bit of a challenge for some of the boys and their 65 year old leader BUT THEY ALL MADE IT!
Can you find her?
I'm very proud of her and her love of the boys and her dedication to scouting!
Hi Spencer,
Glad to hear we have a world class doodler in the family. Congratulations!
We will do all we can to support you with our votes. Can't wait until Monday when the
voting link is available. If you get to it before we can in the west please post us another link
like Auntie Cassy did in her post.

HI ALL!! Well, I'm there for Spencer and I hope you all are too. I have it on my Outlook Calendar to make sure I vote everyday, as often as the rules say I can. I have to say though, I use Mozilla Firefox and I wasn't able to find the site, but when I used Internet Explorer, I found it just fine. Here is the website so you won't have any excuse for not checking it out and making sure you VOTE!!

http://www.google.com/doodle4google/index.html

I can't wait to see Spencer's 'DOODLE' up on the Google home page!! So, I can proudly say, 'My Nephew did that!! - Whoo Hooo'

MAKE A DATE TO BE THERE OR BE SQUARE - VOTE, VOTE, VOTE!!!

EXCITEMENT AT THE NORTON HOUSE!!!
Spencer has been chosen as one of forty national finalists for the doodle 4 google contest. Spencer's doodle for this contest was chosen from thousands of national entries. He is going to be flown with his dad to the google complex in Mountain View, California in several weeks for the announcement of the national winner. Starting this Monday, May 12 on google's homepage the voting will open to the public. Voting will last until Sunday, May 18. The top four doodles with the most votes will each win a laptop computer. Google's webmaster and other google employees will choose a national winner from the top four. The national winner will recieve a laptop computer, a $10,000 college scholarship, and a $25,000 computer grant for their school. Its all about the votes everyone. We are trying to get as many votes for Spencer as we can so that he has a chance of being named the national winner. He is already honored to have been chosen one of the forty regional winners, but wouldn't it be exciting to have him chosen as the national winner. Please help us out by voting and telling everyone you know to vote for Spencer Norton (his doodle is "What if the whole world Rocked!").
Thanks everyone. We love you all.

Busy...but get to go to Lake Powell with Chris Hillman, Bobby and Tristan tomorrow....good to be back in Utah!

Love you all!

A couple of weeks ago there was a momentous occasion at the Normand house in VA. By the pictures you can see Shawnna got her hair cut. I've really thought back and I'm pretty sure this was her first MAJOR hair cut since her birth. Maybe there were some small trims along the way, but this was definitely a MAJOR WHACK JOB to her long locks. Having been a mother of small children (albeit a LONG TIME AGO!), I can just imagine how much easier and cooler this upcoming summer will be for both MOM and DAUGHTER!! I was never as patient as Ninha has been with the long hair-thing, Jocelyn had short hair until she was probably in middle school, where she could take care of it herself!! You know me, I love the SHORT HAIR DO'S - WAY TO GO SHAWNNA - YOU'RE A CUTIE!!

Love, Grandma TaTa
Saturday evening the 3rd of May David and his new finance Robin spent the evening and stayed overnight before returning to Utah. Robin wanted to attend the play Wicked now playing in LA. So David was kind enough to drive her down or maybe excited enough or maybe anticipation drove him because on the way down they stopped ing Las Vegas and David proposed to her in Paris. (the casino/hotel) very romantic from the conversation we heard. To learn more ask lots of questions at an upcoming event. Until then.

So here is the final product of our logos for our soccer club. The colors are the colors of our jerseys. I told you about this in an earlier post and thought you would like to see the outcome.

Hope you are doing well mom. You are in our prayers!

Spent the evening watching Real Salt Lake win 4-0 in a blizzard...so much white snow they actually pulled out the orange ball. It was fun to be with bobby and take a breather. The day was a pretty brutal one until i met up with bobby, skip and chris. We had a real fun time just hanging out and trying to stay warm.

Much love!
